چکیده

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a well known resource and significantly related to development of ventilation-associated pneumonia.(1-3) Pneumonia, the inflammatory response resulting from uncontrolled penetration and proliferation of microorganisms in the lower respiratory tract,(4) is the most common nosocomial infection in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. (1,2,4-6) Martino(7) observed that incidence of this infection is from 7 to 21 times greater in intubated patients than in those not requiring the ventilator and Lode et al.(8) reported that 86% of cases are associated to MV. Ventilation-associated pneumonia (VAP) is defined as pneumonia diagnosed in intubated patients under mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours.(4) According to Porzecanski and Bowton(9) about 10% to 20% of patients needing Fernanda Maia Lopes1, Marcelo Farani López2

Ventilator-associated pneumonia: epidemiology and impact on the clinical evolution of ICU patients* Pneumonia associada à ventilação mecânica: epidemiologia e impacto na evolução clínica de pacientes em uma unidade de terapia intensiva

Objective: Although ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cause of nosocomial infection, its role in the prognosis of patients remains undefined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of VAP on the clinical evolution of patients. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study involving 233 patients on mechanical ventilation (VAP group, n = 64; control group, n = 169). ...

Respiratory mechanics of neurological patients undergoing mechanical ventilation under heated humidifier and a heat exchanger filter model Mecânica respiratória de pacientes neurocríticos sob ventilação mecânica submetidos à umidificação aquecida e a um modelo de filtro trocador de calor

Artificial airway (AAW) and mechanical ventilation (MV) are indicated in the presence of imbalance between demand and ventilatory capacity. Upper airways have a very important role for the inspired air heating, humidification and filtration, and are responsible for about 65% of alveolar gas humidity.(1,2) Prolonged inhalation of inappropriately conditioned gases may lead to hypothermia, bronchi...

Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia in Patients Admitted to Intensive Care Units, Using Open or Closed Endotracheal Suctioning

BACKGROUND Critically ill patients under mechanical ventilation require frequent suctioning of airway secretion. Closed suction permits suctioning without disconnection from ventilator; so it might decrease hypoxemia and infection rate. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of closed tracheal suction system (CTSS) versus open tracheal suction system (OTSS). PATIENTS AND METHODS...

Comparing the Effect of Using Normal Saline and Distilled Water for Tracheal Suctioning on the Incidence of Ventilator-associated Pneumonia and Hemodynamic Indexes in Ventilator-dependent Patients

Background and Aims: VAP prevention is a top priority in the intensive care units. The study was conducted to compare the effect of using normal saline and distilled water for tracheal suctioning on the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia and hemodynamic indexes in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: The present study is a randomized clinical trial that was conducted from 2017 to 2...
